Helen Macdonald’s book of essays, Vesper Flights is full of riches. We will hear 2. The first is called The Observatory; Helen goes to the Welney Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust, to visit the swans that migrate there. In the second reading, Eulogy, we walk to the middle of a woods in fading twilight, where the European Nightjar, so closely related to our whip-poor-wills and nighthawks, is a dark-of-night vision, and has an enchanting sound, as we will hear, the sound so close to Macdonald’s feelings for a dying beloved friend.
