I’ll be reading excerpts from the book The Nature of Oaks by Douglas Tallamy, published by Timber Press, Portland Oregon in 2019. I became aware of Tallamy when his book Bringing Nature Home was published in 2007; the main lesson from that book was the importance of planting native trees and shrubs, flowers and grasses in order to provide needed host plants for our native insects. Oak trees host hundreds of insects, more than any other tree, and The Nature of Oaks goes month by month through the seasons in an oaks life and investigates the creatures that rely on these trees for their survival. We start with the month of October.
