Another great chapter about George Knudsen, from the book Afield, Portraits of Wisconsin Naturalists, Empowering Leopold’s Legacy, by Sumner Matteson and published by Little Creek Press and Book Design, Mineral Point, Wisconsin, in 2020.
This is the second reading about Knudsen, born in 1922, who I think of as a Renaissance naturalist. He loved and studied all creatures great and small and took any and all opportunities to teach others. In this part we will hear mention of Frederick and Fran Hamerstron who George’s father thought were fine young biologists working in the Necedah area, and we’ll hear a story about his conversation with Frank Lloyd Wright, at his home called Taliesin, who loved nature. We have Knudsen to thank for abandoned railroad beds becoming walking and biking trails.
